Wonderful Grinder!

What a difference from our old flat burr grinder! We seem to use less beans, but end up with much smoother, more flavourful coffee. The grind is very uniform, and you can adjust grind size and time to an incredibly fine degree. We're far from being baristas, but we now make a damned good cup of coffee!

Great recommendation for a dual-purpose entry-level grinder

I bought one of these a while ago and have gotten some good use out of it. Very good entry-level grinder if you want to do multiple things.

Pros: Good for switching between pour-overs and espresso. It is quite adjustable. I also love timed dosing directly into my portafilter. I always single dose (I put exactly the amount of beans I intend to use into the grinder, rather than storing tons of beans in the top), and although the hopper is quite large, it works well for that. I love the locking feature; I take off the hopper which locks the bottom, put it on my scale, fill it with the beans I want to use, and put it back onto the machine. This is very convenient.

Cons: I might be able to fix this with some fiddling, but I find that I get very close to setting 60 (coarsest) with my pour-over setting, and very close to setting 4 (very fine; 1 is the finest) with espresso. I get a bit concerned about burr rubbing going that fine, but maybe I am just doing something wrong (always possible haha). I know that beyond the 60 points of adjustment, you can adjust the top burr to make further adjustments, but at the settings I am using I think that would mean I would have to choose between my perfect espresso setting and my perfect pour over setting, so I am not messing with it. Curious to hear if others have a different experience.
That being said, I think this machine is definitely capable of ranging from French Press to Pour over to Aeropress to Espresso. Probably not a good idea to do turkish fine on this. You could try, but it would make me nervous.

If you only make pour-overs or french press etc, buy a baratza encore; it will work better. If you do espresso, buy a Baratza Sette 270, it will work better. But if you do pour over and espresso, I don't think either of those are good choices unless you buy and use both. The Breville Smart Grinder, however, does both reasonably well, and at a cheaper price than both, which is great.
