This coffee was purchased as part of a larger buying group of Canadian roasters, a less traditional style of coffee buying. The group was informally founded last year when Drew Johnson of Bows & Arrows in Vicoria, BC called on other roasters in Canada to purchase coffees from the group of producers in Mataquescuintla. The producers in this region have historically had little access to specialty markets, and were therefore left with the low price and volatility of the commodity market, or “C-price”. On top of this, these producers have been resisting a proposed mining project operated by Vancouver-based Pan American Silver. The mine is widely opposed in the community, yet their peaceful resistance has been met with violence and criminalization. Last year the group purchased over 40 thousand kilos from Mataquescuintla, offering significantly higher prices. Purchasing from this group for a second year (and through the pandemic) is integral in ensuring longevity and stability in our partnerships and continuing to support these land defenders in Guatemala.

We roasted Abel’s to highlight the rich caramelly sweetness, while preserving the dried apple accents. It makes for an approachable, balanced and deeply sweet cup.
