James is Awesome

After watching a load of his videos, I'm really looking forward to his book!

Enjoyable but lightweight

A collection of breezy thoughts on coffee, with a few articles that get more substantial. Hoffmann is smart, curious, and approachable in his prose and he covers making coffee (espresso and brews) before turning his attention to the industry itself.

If I express disappointment it is simply that the majority of the entries never really quite become essays. Compare this to a similar collection, Michael Beruit’s 72 Short Essays on Design, which was also composed of blog posts. There the entries were better honed and edited such that each provoked a strong reaction. This is less visionary, less opinionated, and simply more lightweight. It is still enjoyable but not nearly as memorable.

The book is beautifully produced and printed.
