FUTO Wakayama – wearable comfort created by nature

Take, for instance, the Futo Long-Sleeve Knit Top. Its soft, airy cotton fabric comes from the Wakayama Prefecture, home to a waning cluster of factories that still use traditional Loopwheel Knitting Machines.

Loopwheel Machines are bell-shaped contraptions that hang suspended from the ceiling, like massive cocoons swaddled in fabric. Instead of pulling and stretching at high speed, they draw the yard down gradually, letting gravity gently drop each stitch into place.

Because they rely exclusively on natural movement, these machines are slow, producing about one metre of fabric per hour. Despite the widespread shift towards faster, more efficient textile production, a rare group of regional artisans remain committed to tradition, weaving luxurious goods with the Loopwheel machine for over seven decades (and counting).
