Comparing the DF Grinders DF64 vs the DF64V (Gen 2)

DF Grinders (also white labeled as Turin Grinders, Mii Coffee Grinders in different countries.) are famous for their precise and consistent grinding, flexibility, and competitive price point. However, with all of their grinder models, it can be difficult to choose which one is right for you. In this blog post, we’ll be going over the similarities and differences of the DF64 (Gen 2) and DF64V (Gen 2).

Visual Appearance

Visual Appearance Similarities

The DF64 and DF64V Grinders are designed to fit into any coffee bar that it is placed in. Its slanted design is not only visually appealing, but it helps the coffee grinds move with gravity to prevent less fines from getting stuck between the burrs as well as reduces the mess of the grounds. The DF 64 line both have a very sturdy construction - an aluminum body with a powder coating finish for a high-end feel. Both also come with a bellow to help decrease grind retention.

Visual Appearance Differences

At first glance, there are some very obvious differences between the 2 grinders. The DF64 boasts a larger body with a darker wooden lid, as well as a more prominent chrome-wrapped dial with a metal indicator and descriptions (fine, espresso, moka, filter, coarse). The chute of the DF64 is also shorter, with an elevated catch cup. The dosing cup on the grinder can be placed in multiple ways, one with the cup just on the grinder (leaving more space between the chute and cup), and one with a silicone adapter to elevate the catch cup and reduce the mess. Lastly, the DF64 only has one silver button on the side to turn the grinder on and has a more industrial feel to it.

As for the DF64V, it is just a little shorter than the DF64 but much thinner. It also comes with a lighter wooden accent for the lid and the dosing cup stand, giving the grinder a more mid-century feel. The grinder comes with a much smaller adjustment dial, with the words fine and coarse to help you understand where your grind is. The indicator of the dial is also printed on making it less noticeable, but still very easy to use. In addition to the silver power button, the DF64V has a digital dial on the left side for setting the RPMs of the grinder (more on this later). Lastly, although not noticeable, the magnetic chute of the DF64V comes off easily for cleaning.

General Overview of Grinding Capabilities and Features

DF GRINDERS DF64 All-Purpose Coffee Grinder (Gen 2) (120V)

The DF64 is an all-purpose grinder that can be used to brew any type of coffee. It has 64mm Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) flat burrs, which ensure durable and long-lasting performance. The DF64 also comes with a plasma generator (ionizer) that helps eliminate static, which helps in its true zero retention (less than 0.1 g even without the bellows).

The DF64 Gen 2 introduces improvements to the previous model. Notable upgrades include a plasma generator (ionizer) for static reduction, an "anti-popcorn" lid, and an upgraded motor with greater torque. The inclusion of a metal dosing cup, metal funnel, and a wooden lid also adds a touch of premium craftsmanship.

With 90 grind settings, stepless micrometric adjustment, and superior grind consistency, the DF64 Gen 2 provides the precision needed to make extractions more stable and improve their quality and repeatability. The DF64 Gen 2 ensures minimal waste and, coupled with its thoughtful design, is easy to clean. Simply unscrew the collar to access and clean the burrs.

DF GRINDERS DF64V All-Purpose Coffee Grinder (Gen 2) (120V)

Same as the DF64, the DF64V also has 64mm Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) flat burrs, which offer exceptional durability—lasting up to 10 times longer than standard stainless steel burrs. With a stepless micrometric adjustment system, it ensures consistent grind size for more stable extractions across espresso, pour-over, and French press methods.

One of the DF64V’s standout features is its brushless 300W DC motor, which offers variable speed control ranging from 600 to 1800 RPM. This customization allows users to fine-tune grind settings to match their preferred brewing style, unlocking new flavours and improving extraction consistency. Additionally, the built-in plasma generator reduces static, creating light, fluffy grounds with extremely low retention for fresher coffee in every dose.

Designed for both functionality and style, the DF64V Gen 2 boasts a compact aluminum body with wood accents, making it a sleek addition to any coffee setup. It also includes a magnetic grind chute for effortless cleaning and maintenance. Quiet yet powerful, the brushless motor ensures smooth operation, making it ideal for early morning brewing sessions without the noise.

With professional-grade performance at an accessible price, the DF64V Gen 2 stands out as an exceptional value. Its precision, durability, and thoughtful design rivals high-end grinders, making it the perfect choice for those looking to elevate their home coffee experience.

Main Differences between the Grinders

Both grinders are incredible, but there are a few differences that I wanted to highlight.

    • The DF64 Grinder comes with a brushed motor whereas the DF64V comes with a brushless motor. This means that that the DF64V is significantly quieter than the DF64. So, if you wake up early and need your coffee, you don’t have to worry about disturbing anyone in the process.
    • The DF64V allows for control of your grinder’s RPM whereas the DF64 does not. In simple terms, lower RPM creates less fines which allows for greater clarity in your cup with less body and texture, whereas higher RPM means less clarity with a higher body and texture. Being able to play around with your RPM allows you to control your grinds to get the best clarity, body, and feel. So, if you’re a person who likes to experiment with every little detail, this may be the grinder for you.
    • The DF64V has a more mid-century feel and a much smaller footprint whereas the DF64 has a larger footprint and a more industrial feel. If you don’t have much space on your coffee counter, then I recommend the DF64V.
    • Lastly, the DF64V has a magnetic chute which makes cleaning much easier - and we all want a shortcut in cleaning.

In summary, both grinders are incredibly well-built and are great for any coffee bar. If you want a great grinder that lasts for a long time that’s plug-and-play, the DF64 is an incredible option for brewing great cups of coffee time and time again. If you want more variables to play with in your brewing and a grinder that takes up less counter space, then I would recommend the DF64V. Lastly, the size and look of the grinders, although similar, can make a big difference in your coffee bar.
