HARIO Polaris Coffee Scale

Solid, sleek and accurate scale that will improve the consistency of your pour-overs. In Polaris mode the scale will track the amount of water in each pour as simple percentage. Water calculations are automatically made based on your selected water ratio and the amount of coffee. The other feature that I love is that it uses AAA batteries that can be easily replaced with rechargeables. My only complaint is the "touch" ON button is very sensitive and you can accidentally turn it on by just moving it around your counter.

I bought this scale as an upgrade of the classic Hario. I didn't think I needed it, but I am happy I got it. The real fun comes in dialing in how fast you pour, and understanding the impact of early vs late pours on your coffee flavour. All the math is worked out, so you can play, update your recipe, repeat. Very fun!

Currently the Polaris is the best sustainable option for scales aside from the Decent Half-Decent Espresso scale plug-in model (which is not available in Canada yet). I replaced my Timemore black mirror which died after only a few years and because it does not have a replaceable battery I am moving on from Timemore to avoid having to throw out another scale in the near future. The Polaris seems to do the job and until someone in Canada carries the Decent scale (or another ac plug in), this will hopefully last.

The Polaris function is a game changer when you're trying to dial in your ratio.

My previous timemore scale last only 2yr. Hope this one can last longer

I am fairly new to speciality coffees so I cannot compare this to any other coffee scales. I got tired of juggling a slow food scale and a separate timer resulting in pouring inaccurate amounts of water so bought the Hario Polaris after much research. I love how I only need to watch the % pour rate instead of the actual amount. Having all the features in one device has simplified brewing and I love that the timer automatically starts once I start pouring (it has the option to be started manually). I admit that at first coordinating all the features was a learning process but I now have it down pat. For the French Press the timer and weigh scale on their own is sufficient but the other features give me the option of pour over brewing. Having that future option was worth the $10 difference in price from the regular scale. The one feature that would make this scale perfect is a count down timer with alarm; it would be one less thing for me to have to watch. The scale is pretty sensitive - blowing on it is registered. Also the on/on touch is very sensitive so when I put the scale into the cupboard I place it with control panel going in first so I’m just handling the platform. All in all a great scale for the price!
