ACAIA Lunar Digital Scale

I'm going to do some comparisons to the Hiroia Jimmy scale, which is what I've been using for a few years. I believe it was sold here for a much lower cost than the Lunar previously but unfortunately doesn't seem to be available anymore here.

The Jimmy is a little larger, and doubles as a great pour over scale as well, where the Lunar might feel a little small for that, it is a good size for espresso although the knock off Felicita Arc improves on that, making it a bit wider but not taller, and is supposed to be pretty good except if you need warranty support... then you're kinda out of luck!
With Acaia and Eight Ounce Coffee at least you have a support system if you do encounter issues.

The Speed of the Lunar (2021 version) is slightly faster than the Jimmy, not dramatically so, but when comparing recording in slow-mo, you can see it. The older non 2021 Acaia Lunar did seem like it was slower to start up than the Jimmy, but 2021 version is pretty quick to start up. Weighing Speed differences are negligible.

All the modes are a bit confusing at first, lots of similar modes, and some that I wonder what the point of having it is.

The 0.01 accuracy isn't so great, but they don't advertise it as being accurate to the 0.01g at least. Weighing accuracy is about the same as the Jimmy, BUT the JIMMY seems to be more sure of itself, it sticks to a number more stably, The Lunar will jump around a bit with the slightest breeze or movement of the table, so it's more 'sensitive'.

Jimmys App isn't that great, and Acaia confusingly has more than one app that works with the scale, which are definitely nicer / better, but still not so intuitive that you'd probably WANT to actually use them. I think these scales are better standalone, OR for combining with other smart tech, like a Decent espresso machine or the Acaia Orbit grinder.

I had some issues with using the Tare Save feature, for some reason it wouldn't let me update / overwrite the initial saved weight, it kept flashing an H20_ warning which made me think it was defective AND that they might not honor the warranty due to water damage (although I just noticed it does say here that it even covers water damage, which is pretty awesome). I don't think there is documentation on how to overwrite the tare save OR there's a glitch in the latest firmware, but I managed to get it working somehow eventually. The scale is not waterproof but is supposedly water resistant. A nice touch would be if it came with a little silicon plug for the USB port. The Jimmy needs that too. Oh, and speaking of the USB, the 2021 Lunar has USB C which is nice because it's a bit more robust connector & you don't need to worry about jamming it in the wrong way (Jimmy has the older style USB connector, same with the older Lunar).

My Jimmy has an adhesive rubber pad that was an add-on for it (which may actually be hard to find in Canada), it covers the entire weighing part of the scale which is nice, and I like that it doesn't come off, For the Lunar, I might just get some double-sided tape to adhere the small removable silicone pad to it. I'm not a fan of putting cups or hard things down on hard surfaces, it's much nicer and feels like the scale is happier when there's a nice rubber protective pad to absorb some of the shock.

One big advantage I believe the Acaia Lunar has over the Jimmy though, the Lunar doesn't stop weighing when you're in auto timing mode for espresso. Sometimes with the Jimmy scale If I'm pulling a shot and it starts off really slow flowing, it will think the flow has stopped & it prematurely stops the timing AS WELL as the weighing! So, I will have no clue what the final weight was. With the Lunar it seems to keep weighing even when the timer stops. The Lunar is also a bit smarter as it doesn't usually stop the timer prematurely even with a pretty slow flowing espresso shot where it was dripping irregularly at first.

The display on the Lunar, updates faster and in video shows up much nicer without flickering. It also has brightness control and seems higher quality. I like the flow rate indicator, and the advanced settings (Jimmy has some, but not as much) although I think they need a better explanation (for both scales) as to what some of the settings do, like the Zero Range setting.

It's a great scale but it has some tough competition with the Jimmy. The speed difference isn't really noticeable between the two. And the Jimmys detachable display head does come in handy like when weighing a large bowl or box, or something that might overwise make the display obstructed (although with either of these, if using the app you can use your phone as well as an alternative external display).

I think if you're into espresso but ALSO doing pour overs and don't want to invest in TWO Acaia scales, the Jimmy is a good cheaper alternative, as long as your espresso machine has room for it and you're not like me always grinding too finely and running slow fl...

Very accurate

The Acaia Lunar is a crazy expensive scale, designed for espresso brewers. I was getting frustrated with my Microbalance scale, paired with a Gaggimate. The Lunar is so simple to use, and stable. It’s also a lot smaller, and beautifully made! The display is bright and clear. The auto tare/auto time function is simple and works every time.
So yeah, it’s expensive, but I understand why it’s so popular.

Great scale and super accurate and sleek. I use it for pourover and espresso, as well as baking too. I love that it’s rechargeable!

Scale is great for measuring the ins and outs of espresso, from the grinds into the portafilter, to the espresso in your cup. One thing to keep an eye out for is that the upgraded base plate can make it difficult to fit the cup underneath the portafilter, especially if you're using something taller like a keep cup and a spouted portafilter.

With my ECM Casa V i dont have much standover room/clearance for a scale and cup - but this compact scale fits perfectly and measures accurately and quickly. It is a great product and 100% worth the cost - the only negative feedback I have is that if the "app" functionality is important for you - I have never been able to get the apps to work and Acaia doesn't seem to be updating them.

Excellent scale, accurate, fast , and best of all great for pulling shots as it rates automatically , weighs , and gives you the flow rate which is super helpful to understanding your extraction.

Getting a lot of data from my espresso shot is so helpfull to understand whats going on.

Although assigning the various functions can be rather mysterious, the Icaia stays with the functions that I need it to do. Also, it’s compact size gets it smoothly under the cup..

It’s a highly accurate, compact scale at a premium price. I love it. The flow meter is really useful and I love that it is small enough to fit into a modified drip tray. Recommend.

I've only had the scale a few weeks now so I can't speak to longevity but so far the Lunar 2021 has been very nice to use daily. Making only espresso, I stick to the one mode (manual start/top timer and weighing) which works reasonably well though I don't always hit the touch screen's star/stop button when I think I do (thank goodness for the audible beep for both start and stop). Coming from a Brewista 1 for 3 years prior, I really appreciate how the Lunar's display never suddenly stalls for no good reason and the timer button doesn't randomly double-press by itself and clear the timer when attempting to stop it (this was the main reason I decided to upgrade). Its low profile makes it easy to fit a variety of cups under the grouphead.

The scale's menu navigation is a little quirky at first and the options aren't self-explanatory so you definitely need the manual beside you as the app doesn't have access to all of the scale's options of which there are many. By default the weighing precision is 0.1 which can be increased to 0.01. Also, the flow rate bar at the top of the display can be adjusted to enable brighter dots at larger intervals and dimmer dots in between which makes it easier to gauge at a glance. Beeping can be disabled (I don't suggest it), weight units grams or ounces, the end-of-extraction summary's self-clearing time can be disabled if you want more time to record your data before manually clearing the timer and weight independently: this summary also includes the average flow rate which is nice. You can also disable each of the 7 modes and only keep the most frequently used ones active so it's faster to cycle through, which are represented by a combination of square, triangle and droplet symbols that I don't find too intuitive. There's also a new/hidden 7th mode specifically for pourover with the latest firmware updates.

There's a 100g calibration weight included and 2 pair of adhesive strips for the base (1 grippy and 1 smooth), USB-C cable (the other end is still rectangular), instruction manual and heat pad which I find hard to keep clean of dust and grinds.

Connecting to the app on my iPhone was quick and easy as expected. The app also allows manual timer start/stop as well as taring. The response time for the timer had no noticable delay, but I mostly don't use it since it's just faster and easier to use the scale by itself.

For areas of improvement, waterproofing isn't as good as the Brewista as I can see the electronics from the gap between the weighing pan and base, definitely take care to wipe surfaces dry before placing the Lunar on them and be mindful of the drip tray splashing up from blasting the steam wand. The battery level indicator uses the dots at the top when powering down but when going through the menus it shows the numbers too, oddly inconsistent and I wish they'd show the digits all the time.

So far I'm very happy with the 2021 Lunar.

A very responsive scale! Makes espresso making easier to handle compared to using cheaper scales that break every couple of months!

I honestly think this scale was too pricy for what it is (i.e. to measure stuff) and was more willing to invest in the Fellow scale. However, I knew I would want to go down the espresso rabbit hole eventually and I do not regret my purchase one bit. It really is suited for a more workplace/commercial environment but using at home has been perfect. It's easy to clean and has a lot of different modes that help with both pour over and espresso. The one thing I simply can't get over is how tiny it is but how responsive and long the battery has been! Coming from two cheap 20 dollar scales from amazon, using the lunar everyday just makes me more and more happy that I bought this scale!

Great scale for espresso

I bought my Acaia Lunar from Eight Ounce Coffee over six years ago and I still use it every day. It looks and functions the same (okay, even better, with firmware updates) as the first time I used it. It's just a great purchase I've never regretted.

What an amazing scale. It is well made, responsive, accurate and very well made. It’s small foot print is perfect for my espresso work flow. The illumination is bright (adjustable) and clear. There are also a good number of customizable options. Although expensive, it’s obvious quality is well worth with the money.

Amazing scale! Only gripe is the touch interface but it is the most accurate and robust scale I have ever used!
