    From Harken:
This is the first coffee in a new series that is the passion project of our Head Roaster Stacey. We will be donating proceeds from the sale of each of these coffees to the Wish Drop-In Center located in the DTES that supports women working in the sex industry by providing heath care, wellness, resources and support to women who are in a vulnerable situation.

We will be featuring coffees grown by female producers, which is sadly far too rare in an attempt to not only support a great cause, but to give recognition to some of the hard working women in the coffee industry.

This coffee comes from a cooperative of all women coffee producers in the Rushashi sector of Rwanda. At the co-op, Abakundakawa, farmers hand-pick ripe cherries on the volcanic slopes of Rwanda’s mountainous Gakenke district. The area’s distinct micro-climate, high elevation and rich volcanic soils contribute to producing coffee with balanced sweet, floral, and fruit-forward notes in the cup. Abakundakawa has grown rapidly, adding a second washing station and expanding its membership from 180 to nearly 2,000 coffee growers since its founding in 2004.

Abkundakawa has two prominent women's associations, Duhingekawa and Abanyameraka, demonstrating the co-op's focus on improving the livelihoods of women in their community.

This coffee is a Bourbon varietal, using a washed process. We loved how vibrant and juicy this coffee is. While drinking it makes us think of a really bright red wine, cherry pie and black tea. We also notice a very refreshing mint-like finish that lingers on your tongue.

It is also Fair Trade and Organic certified.

As with all of our Special Selection coffees, we will be donating $1.00 from the sale of each 200g box to the Wish Drop-In Center that helps women in DTES their mission is to improve the health, safety and well-being of women who are involved in Vancouver’s street-based sex trade. Their vision is for every woman to have access to opportunities to make free, healthy and positive choices. Women who engage in sex work are some of the most marginalized and vulnerable women in our society. Those who engage in street-based sex work are even more at risk of social stigma, violence and health crises.

WISH Drop-In Centre Society provides support to women who work in the street-based sex trade—80 per cent of whom are homeless or precariously housed, and half of whom are Indigenous. All live in poverty.
